Charles Bernstein Lattingtown NY 1973 GTV 2000
I was young and working for a real estate company in New Jersey. One of the executives came to work in an Austin Healy 3000 and my love for sports cars began. I went into hock and purchased a leftover 1967 Big Healy. Had it a little over three years. When it rained it would not start. It had to go.
I saw an ad for a 1969 Alfa Romero GTV which was imported by a soldier returning from Italy. It was gorgeous. Green metallic over chocolate brown leather. I quickly sold the Healy and bought the Alfa. It was a revelation in how a car can handle. A few years later I sold it to an Alfa mechanic and life went on, but I never stopped thinking of that car.
Not even 30 years later, which is when I saw an old guy driving a GTV. Not in good shape, but it was a GTV around town. Saw the car in front of a store, and waited for the owner. We talked for awhile and that was it. I found my car on EBay. The seller was in Brooklyn. I looked it over and drove the car. I was hooked. I purchased the car and a couple of days later I drove to the Alfa Auto Clinic in Baldwin. As soon as Gaspésie saw the car he knew it and knew the history of the car.
I found the mechanic I sold the 1969 GTV turns out to be the owner of Penny Lane Motors in Huntington. He gave the car to his wife who crashed it and it was repaired, repainted a non-Alfa color and sold.
I have a 1969 E-Jag, Porsche C-4 and a couple of BMW’s but my GTV is the car I connect with.
Buying the Alfa led to joining the club. It added another dimension to owning the car a great group of guys that really care for the cars and each other, thanks
