Alfa Romeo Spettacolo Sportivo - Zandvoort Netherlands August 31 2010
The Dutch Alfa Romeo Owners Club (Stichting Club Alfa Romeo Bezitters) hosed another fantastic gathering in Zandvoort Holland this past weekend celebrating the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo and the 25th anniversary of the Alfa 75. For two weeks prior to the event, the weather in Holland has been horrible with strong winds and heavy rain. Fortunately the sun peaked out for most of the weekend until Sunday afternoon when a torrential storm said the parties over! Highlights of the weekend included some fantastic vintage races, rare cars brought from Alfa Romeo's museum in Italy andmany fantastic Dutch, German and UK cars driven to the event by Alfisti far and wide -
Mitcar - Midlands Italian Car Day - August 8th 2010 Chatsworth House UK
MITCAR is an annual Italian auto event held each summer in the Midlands of the UK. It is held on a Sunday in late summer, usually August. This year the event was held at the amazing Chatsworth House in Derbyshire England. The event is open to all makes of Italian cars/motorcycles but it is the UK Alfa Romeo Owners who show the largest presents. This years event was extra special to fans of the Alfa Romeo "boxer" engines used in the AlfaSud and Alfa 33 cars as it was deemed this would be the official "boxer day" event as well. Although they are virtually unknown in the USA, the Alfasud has a strong and devoted following in the UK. For those who wonder what all the fuss is about the Sud.... to drive one is to love one. -
Tutto Italiano - Brookline, Mass - August 1st 2010

AROC 2010 National Convention, Frederick Maryland
This was the 1st National Convention I attended in many years and it was a blast. Sorry for all the folks who missed out on the fun. We started out at 10:00am on Weds., with Mike Bange and myself caravanning to Morristown, NJ to meet up with 9 other Alfa’s from AONE, NJ, Ct clubs and one brave soul, Phil, from Montreal who had been on the road since 5:00am that mornng. Mike & I now hold the club record for the smallest Alfa caravan ever seen on the Cross Bronx Expressway!! Other NYAROC members attending the 100 year celebration included George Linton, David Rivkin, George Pezold, Mike Davias, Rob Rizzo, Pino Fiduli, and Gino & John Agostino. We arrived in Frederick about 5:00pm on Weds where we all promptly checked in at the Convention Registration desk. Mike had enough time to have his ’73 GTV tech inspected at the Hotel for Thurs. track events. The time trials were held at Summit Point raceway on a very hot Thursday – ideal racing weather for Alfa’s and their drivers. The track time trials were followed on Fri. with an Auto Cross and beginners TSD Rallye. Besides the regular convention events, attendees were also afforded the opportunity to take self directed tours to the Eisenhower Farm, Gettysburg and a night bus tour of Washington DC. At the Friday evening banquet, we had the pleasure of hearing Jamie Kitman give the keynote address. He had a receptive crowd laughing in the aisles. Jamie spoke about how he had agreed to deliver the keynote address but forgot he had already booked 2 other events for the same day. So after finishing up an early day event, he hopped into his trusty non air conditioned Alfa Giulia TI and made the drive down to Frederick in 95 degree heat in several traffic jams along the way!!! Saturday was the largest crowd attending the convention. Over 600 Alfisti had 200+ Alfa’s on display at the Stone Manor Concorso outside of Frederick. The sight of waves of Alfa’s on display was breathtaking. After the Concorso, a Gimmick Rallye was run from Stone Manor back to the Convention Hotel. The Rallye ran for about 75 miles across farmland, quaint towns and Civil War battlefields. A terrific route. The Convention concluded on Sunday with the presentation of awards. NYAROC was well represented as Mike Bange and Pino Fiduli walked away with Concorso plaques for their respective Alfa’s -- John Catera -
Alfa Centennial - Milan - June 28th - AFRA and ZAGATO
Just south of Arese (former home of the Alfa factory) is located AFRA, an ultimate destination for those in need of new/oldstock parts for classic Alfas. A fantastic selection of parts even for the rarest of Alfas - although the price is a bit high. I did manage to pick up a "like new" owners manual for the Jr Zagato along with some other hard to find parts. A few miles from AFRA is located both the home of Zagato and Touring. The facility is located down a deserted stretch of road that looks like a dead-end. The building was formally used both design and build Zagato cars but now is only used for design work and the actual building work is farmed out. The extra space that Zagato was left with after shutting down the manufacturing arm was then rented out to Touring Superleggera. It was quite amazing peaking into the doors of Touring and seeing the unfinished auto bodies within. No photos were permitted. We received a short tour of the Zagato showroom and two of important questions were answered; The new TZ3 is build on a custom platform of tubular carbon fiber - not an 8C chassis as often said. Also, the Jr Zagato cars were delivered to Zagao as completed Alfa Spiders then stripped by Zagato and turned into Jr Z cars. Crazy but true!! -
Alfa Romeo Centennial - Sunday June 27th - Alfa "huggs" Milan
After the "Italian style organization" of Saturday many of the gathered Alfisti chose to make sunday a "non car day". But at least half of the four thousand cars did decide to venture out on the roads again in the hot sun and participate in a drive around Milan via the ring road. Each participant was given a centennial flag to attach to the roof of their car. Helicopters were dispatched to document the event. There were "pit stop" locations where drivers were given a puzzle peace that would eventual form the centennial logo. Police escorts were available to help the massive group navigate. A great way to end a fantastic event. -
Alfa Romeo Centennial - Saturday June 26th - Milan
At 9am, over 4000 Alfas converged on the Rho fair convention center outside of Milan. Parking this many cars would be a logistical nightmare even for the Germans but the Italians did it with style. A several mile traffic jam full of beautiful cars is not such a bad thing. Parking areas were organized by country with a special section devoted to the top 100 Alfas in the center. The Rho Fair was and Alfistis dream come true. The parking lot of attendees was a dream car show. Everywhere you looked was another car that you have only read about - now here in front of you in perfect condition. Within the convention center was a display of some of the most special Alfas both old and new as well as book, clothing, wine and coffee vendors. After ogling the cars and meeting up with old friends a massive and quite good buffet lunch was made available. At 3pm the top 100 cars followed by another thousand or so made the trip to the center of Milan and turned the city in to a fantastic tribute to Alfa Romeo. The locals and tourists were treated to an amazing selection of rare cars parked among the beautiful medieval buildings. -
Alfa Centennial - Friday June 25th - Lago Magoria
Over 500 Alfas assembled this day for a 40km parade/drive though an oriental rally route up in the mountain roads and villages that surround the beautiful Lago Magoria. Every model of Alfa imaginable turned out to be part of this historic drive. At each town the streets became filled with vintage Alfas who received VIP treatment from the local police. The locals turned out in force to cheer as the cherished cars from Milan made their way thought the narrow and very twisty roads up and then down the thrilling mountain roads. -
Alfa Centennial - Milano - Thursday, June 24th, 2010
The clutch on the JrZ was not disengaging so I took the car into a local shop in north of Milan. It was discovered that both the master cylinder and slave cylinder needed replacement. A fantastic shop was recommended to me and the work was done quickly and at a price that could not be beat. A big thank you to Sergio Biondi at Autoriparazioni. Thursdays big event was the opening of the Alfa Romeo Historic Museum in Arese where the original Alfa factory once stood. The crowds were enormous and very excited. The museum is a fantastic showplace that has on display some of the most important Alfas. At 2pm the attendees gathered along with important personal from Alfa Romeo and former racing drivers for a toast to Alfa Romeo for at this time was the company conceived 100 years ago. Next stop was the Alfa Romeo exhibit at Parco Esposizioni Novegro just outside of Milano. Inside this huge exhibit hall were hundreds of incredible Alfas from private collections. Cars from all over the world were invited to display. -

Alfa Centennial Drive - Day Four - Tellas Austria to Stresa Italy
It was difficult to pack up and leave such an incredible resort/hotel. Now all future lodgings will be compared to this last nights stay and will pale by comparison. The drive for day four was available in two flavors; long and short. The longer of the two drives took us over several mountain ranges and through some beautiful farmlands. Switzerland is an amazing little country full of happy looking cows with musical bells hanging from their necks. We were warned about the Swiss police and the intolerance for cars - with speeding cars being almost an act worse then murder…. so we kept a sharp eye on the speedometer. As the elevation increased the tempture dropped to the point of freezing. At the ultimate hight we encountered about a foot of snow. Within two hours we were in the tropical climate of Stresa Italy - an area that overlooks the beautiful Lago Magoria in Northern Italy. -
Alfa Centennial Drive - Day Three - Munich to Telfs Austria
Leaving the big city of Munich was extra tricky for the drivers as it was quite rainy and the route book was difficult to follow but as soon as the correct roads were found we were greeted with a beautiful drive through some twisty mountain roads and small villages that fortunately open for business. As we climbed up into the mountains and the tempture dropped, some amazing vistas were exposed in the clouds. Seeing mountains this huge in person is quite stunning. The days drive ended at one of the most spectacular hotel resorts I've ever seen; The Interalpen Hotel Tyrol way up a winding road just past Tellas Austria. Aside from the stunning views and huge rooms it included an incredible swimming pool that was part inside and part outside of the hotel. The air tempture was quite cold but the water was warmed to perfection. -
Alfa Centennial Drive - Day Two - Frankfurt to Munich
The sun was shining in Frankfurt as the 300 Alfa owners awoke and planed the days drive. This days drive from Frankfurt would take us over 400km of twisting roads through the German countryside past and through many small towns and villages. Since it was Sunday the only people we notice were those in the morning coming from or going to church. As the wether turned from sunny to rain we were all glad our parking area for the nights hotel stay was underground. Filled to maximum capacity and then some, this garage was an Alfisiti's dream as every Alfa imaginable was parked within. Tomorrow - Austria and the start of the Alps! -
Alfa Centennial - Holland to Milano - Day One
The day started in Kerkrade at a former Abby - Rolduc Convention center/Hotel. A huge facility that included a church complete with a spooky crypt in it's lower level and an in-house brewed abby ale that was quite fantastic. A great variety cars were gathered for the mornings drive. Also on display were three copies of the newest Alfa Romeo - The Giulietta - on loan from a local Alfa Romeo dealer who delivered them by truck to the parking area behind the Abby. The group of almost 300 cars over-filled the parking lot of the Kempinski Hotel outside of Frankfurt Germany after the scenic 4 hour drive from South Holland. It was quite enjoyable seeing Alfas scattered along the roads - some in groups, some on their own - as they made there way long the twisty roads of Germany. -
Westbury Gardens - 100 years for Alfa Romeo
For the last 44 years in June, the Greater New York Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America has held one of the most prestigious Auto Show-Concourse d'Elegance in the Northeast at Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island. This year due to the leadership of NYAROC President Dr. Dino Pappous, Board Member Vic Cerami and member of both clubs, Stuart Light, Alfa Romeo was chosen as the featured marque for 2010 in honor of our storied marques 100th birthday. Old Westbury Gardens was the home of the Phipps family ( US Steel ) and consists of 160 acres of manicured parkland with a mansion built in the manner of a Charles II stately home. Completed in 1906, Old Westbury Gardens is located on the historic North Shore of Long Island, associated with the Gilded Age of the Robber Barons and the Society types portrayed in The Great Gatsby. It is now a public park trust. Every Sunday members of NYAROC meet for breakfast at a local Diner. That the Diner was only two miles from the Show site was a happy coincidence. Lining up in the order of display as determined by Stu Light, Sedans, GTV6s, Spiders and Sprints, 26 Alfas dominated the local roads as we made our way through the imposing wrought iron, gilded gates to the display area. 23 more Alfisti arrived and were parked according to type in the featured marque area. Hot, clear weather, people in period dress, a beautiful setting and relaxed Alfisti. A great way to spend a Sunday -- David Rivkin NYAROC -
